Bohemian Bridal Arch

Peace, love and hippie wedding bliss. It’s Wedding Wednesday and this week we’re bringing you a groovy bridal arch from a tie-dye themed wedding of two flower children.

Bohemian wedding arch at Morris Arboretum by Stein Your Florist Co.

We went on site at the beautiful Morris Arboretum in Philadelphia, PA to adorn this arch in colorful blooms including sunflowers, blue hydrangea, orange gerbera daisies, solidego and monte casino asters. We further decked the arch with curly willow branches, Spanish and sheet mosses and finished it with whimsical butterflies throughout and stones at the base. Our bohemian couple loved it!

A Stein Family Wedding

It’s Wedding Wednesday! This week we thought we’d share a beautiful bridal bouquet and cake design from an extra special wedding, the wedding of two wonderful people that are forever a part of the Stein Your Florist Co. family.

This lovely bridal bouquet (and awesome couple) will always be one of our favorites! Pale pink roses, white lisianthus, miniature calla lilies, stock flower, green hypericum berries, hanging amaranthus and seeded eucalyptus create the perfect wedding clutch bouquet. Soft, romantic and simply stunning.

Their cake is also one to remember. Pretty petals complimenting the bride’s bouquet and bands of ribbon to match the bridesmaids’ dresses turned this petite cake into a reception show stopper!

Petite Peony Bridal Bouquet

It’s that day of the week again… Wedding Wednesday!! This week’s bouquet is a petite bridal clutch of white peonies. It is so simple and sweet with a bit of pearl accent on it’s stems; it whispers of wedding romance.

Peonies are symbolically known as the flower of riches and honor. Their opulent, full, rounded blooms embody romance and prosperity and are considered an omen of good fortune and a happy marriage, making them a highly desired flower for many brides. They are the traditional floral symbol of China, the state flower of Indiana, and the 12th wedding anniversary flower.

Peak peony season begins in early spring and extends through late June, perfect for all those springtime weddings!

Penny for your Thoughts

November is Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness month. This devastating disease has touched the lives of the owner and his family here at Stein Your Florist Co., as well as, many of our staff. Through sharing our story and our fund raising efforts we have also learned that it has affected the lives of many of our beloved customers and friends in the community as well.

Penny Floor for Alzheimer's Disease Research at Steins at Sunset Florist in Burlington, NJ
Purple is the color for Alzheimer's Disease Awareness. Our model is draped in
purple blooms and an awareness ribbon on our hand laid penny
floor benefiting Alzheimer's Disease Research.
Alzheimer’s is a disease that attacks the brain; it is the most common form of dementia. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 5.4 million Americans are living with the disease and every 69 seconds someone in the US develops it. It is the 6th leading cause of death in the US and of the top 10 diseases that kill, Alzheimer’s is the only one that is not preventable or curable.

Eager to do our part in the fight against Alzheimer’s we held a fundraiser at our Philadelphia location benefiting Alzheimer’s Disease Research (ADR), a program of the American Health Assistance Foundation (AHAF). Since 1986, ADR has funded more than $74 million to support Alzheimer’s research and has made significant progress in the understanding and treatment of this puzzling disease. They are confident that with the help and support of others that they can eventually defeat this cruel and dreadful disease.

Stein Your Florist Co. supports Alzheimer's Disease Awareness and disease research.
One of our online campaigns to raise the awareness of Alzheimer's disease.
We also painted awareness ribbons on our shop windows to show our support.
In addition to our fundraising event we held a penny drive benefiting ADR as well. We collected pennies from the community and began installing a penny floor at our Burlington, NJ location, Steins at Sunset Florist. Our staff and customers donated their pennies, which we glued to the floor, and the funds were donated to ADR. Additionally members of our staff and students from the neighborhood donated their time to help us record the date and mint of each penny to gather “fun facts” about our project. We made monetary contributions for every hour they spent working on our penny floor. The “Penny for your Thoughts” instillation benefiting Alzheimer’s Disease Research was the talk of the town, few people have ever seen that many pennies glued to a floor before!

Our floor benefiting Alzheimer's Disease Research included a medallion hand
laid in pennies as a centerpiece of the room.
Unfortunately, on December 2, 2014 a car crashed into Steins at Sunset Florist, causing massive damage to the store, including tearing up pennies and spilling the car’s fluids over the floor. We are saddened that we will be losing our penny floor in the reconstruction, but are grateful that no one, sans the driver, who will recover, was hurt and that we remain open for business. We are brainstorming ways to pay tribute to our former penny floor in a new benefit for Alzheimer’s disease research.

If we all work together we can raise awareness about this devastating disease and one day find a cure.

A Single Rose

This week’s Wedding Wednesday bouquet is super simple, but still romantic and sweet.

Known as “the bridal flower,” the white rose is said to symbolize the new and pure bond of two people. The white rose signifies a bride's worth, innocence and loyalty to her husband whether the rose is part of a bouquet or standing alone. And, of course all roses, no matter the color, symbolize love.

We’ve accented our single rose with some long blades of lily grass and a generous cluster of seeded eucalyptus with a champagne bow. This bouquet is also perfect for the budget conscious bride, a single rose isn’t just elegant, but affordable too!

If you're in the Philadelphia, PA or Burlington, NJ area and would like to meet with one of Stein Your Florist Co.'s expert wedding consultants call us at 800-887-4013.

For the Love of Cats

Shop Cat Poly on the Green Roof at Stein Your Florist Co.
Shop Cat Poly on the Green Roof at Stein Your Florist Co.
We love our furry feline friends! They are wonderful companions without the over neediness of their canine counterparts. Our shop cats, Cat and Poly, make our work days a joy and remind us to play, stretch, relax, gaze out the window and enjoy the occasional catnap or two.

Isosceles Cat with Gerbera Daisies - Stein Your Florist Co.
Gerbera daisies are non-toxic to cats and dogs.
Cats are the furry part of our families that make our houses homes. They tend to be curious, eager to take a nibble or two (or many many more) on that beautiful bouquet of flowers your beau just brought you, so it is important that when you’re enjoying your flowers and plants they can be enjoyed by your kitties too!

Ceclia Cat with a Collar of Carnations - Stein Your Florist Co.
Carnations are toxic to dogs and cats,
but they make a lovely collar.
Sam and Dean Cats with Roses - Stein Your Florist Co.
Roses are non-toxic to cats and dogs.
So how will you know if a particular plant or flower is potentially toxic? Thanks to the internet we can check these things out in a flash! We recommend starting with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center website where you can find a searchable list of both toxic and non-toxic plants for both cats and dogs. It’s best to know the scientific name as well as the common name of the plants or flowers when doing your pet homework, since sometimes multiple plants with different characteristics may share the same common name.

Sam Cat and Coxcomb - Stein Your Florist Co.
Coxcomb are non-toxic to cats and dogs.
Many plants that your cats may munch of will cause nothing worse than a little digestive upset, but some may cause more serious health issues. Some common flowers and plants that are toxic to both cats and dogs are:  aloe, amaryllis, azaleas, baby’s breath, begonias, bird of paradise, and tulips. Members of the Lilium genus, including asiatic, casablanca, Easter, and stargazer lilies, can cause serious kidney problems (and possibly even death) if ingested by cats.

So what is a pet friendly bouquet? A bouquet consisting of plants and flowers that are not considered to be toxic to pets (primarily cats and dogs) of course. Flowers such as roses, African daisies, orchids and most ferns and plants such as bromeliads, African violets and Christmas cactus are non-toxic (although any ingested plant material might occasionally cause mild upset) and would be suitable as to have in households with pets.

Here is a brief list of "pet friendly" flowers and plants courtesy of Dr. Sharon Gwaltney-Brant, Vice President and Medical Director of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.
