Petal It Forward

Stein's Ambassador of Happiness Jessi
was spreading joy on Petal it Forward day!
A week ago today Stein Your Florist & Steins at Sunset Florist joined hundreds of other florists across the country with one shared goal:  to spread happiness with the joy of flowers through a nationwide “Petal It Forward” event.

If this is the first you’re hearing of it, you may be wondering, what is Petal It Forward? It's a day where florists randomly surprise people on the street with flowers. Lucky recipients received 2 bouquets – one to keep and one the share with a friend, family member, co-worker or even a complete stranger.

There is a direct like between flowers & positive emotions. Rutgers University conducted a study that demonstrates that the presence of flowers makes us happy – creating instant delight and enhancing our life satisfaction.
Stein's Ambassador of Happiness Patti
spread a little floral joy with the gas attendant
at Wawa. He was excited to Petal It Forward to
his girlfriend later that day!
As florists, we want people to experience this first hand, so on October 11th our “ambassadors of happiness” hit the streets with more than 40 bouquets, surprising and delighting the recipients. We shared the message of Petal It Forward and received a lot of smiles & gratitude!

The smiles were not just on the faces of the recipients, our ambassadors of happiness were smiling too, because it doesn’t just feel good to receive flowers, but to give them too, which is why each recipient got two bouquets, so they could experience it all first hand.

80% of Americans say, “receiving flowers from others makes me feel happy.”
88% say, “giving flowers to others makes me feel happy.”

More smiles as this man instantly
petaled it forward to his daughters!
With all the smiles (and even a few happy tears) we were truly touched by everyone that we got to share the joy of flowers with and we are so happy that so many people got a chance to experience flower power first hand. To see more Petal It Forward fun, search the hashtag #petalitforward on social media to see tons of posts from 573 Petal It Forward events across the country.

We’re looking forward to next year! Can’t wait that long? We totally get it! We’re open every day of the year so you can Petal It Forward whenever you like!

Spreading more floral happiness!

Check out Stein's Ambassador of Happiness Dana in this video as she breaks down what the day is all about and surprises someone on the street with flowers!

Almost Autumn

Now that it’s September and school is back in session, everyone seems to be thinking autumn, and we’re not complaining. This summer has been so hot, we’re ready to welcome the cooler weather, changing leaves and pumpkin spice. So this Wedding Wednesday we have a bouquet that has a hint of autumn hues, while still being summery bright in these last few weeks of the season.
Bright Early Autumn Wedding Flowers Clutch Bouquet by Stein Your Florist Co.

This wedding bouquet is a gathering of cheerful orange Asiatic lilies, orange gerbera daisies, yellow button mums, purple statice, red roses, solidego and touches of light lavender daisies. The warm hues make us long for fall, but the purple and lavender keep it summery fresh!

Wedding Ambiance

Guess what day it is… It’s Wedding Wednesday! You were thinking hump day, weren’t you? ;)

This week we have a petite and colorful bridesmaid’s bouquet that will really pop against a myriad of dress colors. This clutch was designed in hot pink roses, purple lisianthus, baby’s breath, and one of our favorite roses, “ambiance” roses. These “ambiance” roses are beautiful with their light yellow hue and reddish coral edges; they have a large bloom size and a high petal count making them even more appealing.

Roses and Lilies

It’s another week of prom flowers on our Wedding Wednesday, which means another week of prom flowers worthy of being walked down the aisle.

White roses and pink hybrid lilies are tightly gathered into a beautiful prom clutch bouquet. It’s clean, simple and oozing elegance. These prom goers have such fantastic taste we can hardly wait to design their future wedding bouquets!

So for the next few weeks, while we are at the peak of prom season, we will be dedicating our Wedding Wednesdays to some fantastic prom bouquets!

Springtime Flower Girl Basket

It’s Wedding Wednesday!! This week we’re bringing you a sweet little springtime flower girl basket.
Springtime Flower Girl Basket by Stein Your Florist Co.
The basket was brought to us by the bride; its green fabric was a perfect match to her bridesmaids’ dresses and the sparkling jewel was a lovely accent. We filled the basket with lemon leaf, baker fern, plumosa and a beautiful floral mix of orange roses, pink carnations, light blue delphinium, light pink spray roses, lavender stock, solidego asters and touches of artificial forsythia. While we do not typically mix fresh and artificial flowers the forsythia was offseason and a favorite of the bride’s. She was happy with the artificial alternative and we think it blended quite nicely. Tucked behind the basket is a bag of pastel rose petals for the flower girl to sprinkle down the aisle and it was finished with some white satin streamers… because every little flower girl loves ribbon streamers!

Winter Storm Jonas

Even we here at Steins, your friendly neighborhood florist that is open 365 days a year has been knocked on our butts a bit by this winter squall. The winds have taken out some of our neon, but we are open through the snowstorm for walk-in service; a handful of our local loyal employees simply refused to keep the doors closed today, no matter the weather.

Fairytale Wedding

This week’s Wedding Wednesday we’re bringing you pics of some of our beautiful wedding designs from a ceremony and reception at the Cairnwood Estate in Bryn Athyn, PA.
Wedding card table at the Cairnwood Estate with flowers by Stein Your Florist Co.
Guests were greeted at the reception by a lavish bouquet on the card table.

What a beautiful facility! The Cairnwood Estate is one of three architectural gems in historic Bryn Athyn, situated among the Bryn Athyn Cathedral and the Glencairn Museum. We had the pleasure of doing some onsite decorating for the lucky couple that choose this as the place for their nuptials.

The wedding ceremony took place in front of the estate's beautiful entrance
and was flanked by two opulent floral arrangements.
They choose roses, lilies, alstroemeria, hanging amaranthus, bells of Ireland, and more blooms in oranges, whites and greens. Opulent foliage completed their look and the warmth of the orange hue complimented the soft colors of the mansion’s interior beautifully.

A Stein Family Wedding

It’s Wedding Wednesday! This week we thought we’d share a beautiful bridal bouquet and cake design from an extra special wedding, the wedding of two wonderful people that are forever a part of the Stein Your Florist Co. family.

This lovely bridal bouquet (and awesome couple) will always be one of our favorites! Pale pink roses, white lisianthus, miniature calla lilies, stock flower, green hypericum berries, hanging amaranthus and seeded eucalyptus create the perfect wedding clutch bouquet. Soft, romantic and simply stunning.

Their cake is also one to remember. Pretty petals complimenting the bride’s bouquet and bands of ribbon to match the bridesmaids’ dresses turned this petite cake into a reception show stopper!

A Bouquet for a Diva

Another Wednesday means we’re talking about another wedding. This week’s Wedding Wednesday bouquet is a bit traditional and a bit modern.

Cascading bridal bouquets are a beautiful traditional style, but they’re not necessarily the current trend. This bouquet is a short cascade, so you get a bit of drama without feeling old fashioned, and the loops of sword fern in this bouquet give it contemporary flair and dramatic texture.

In addition to the sword fern this bridal cascade was created with white calla lilies, star of Bethlehem, white alstroemeria, bits of white hydrangea, bold and beautiful Casablanca lilies, cream carnations, tree fern and a little artificial ginestra. The gold statice throughout the bouquet was at the request of the bride, a self-described diva that said it was her day to shine! A fun addition to an all white bouquet.

We love the varying textures of this bouquet and its blend of classic style with modern flair.

Here Comes the Autumn Bride

Autumn Wedding Bouquet by Stein Your Florist Co.
Circus, leonidas and yellow roses are gathered in a
clutch bouquet with red hypericum berries, plum
dahlias, variegated pittosporum, and preserved oak
leaves and are surrounded by a nest of shiny copper
wire. A beautiful autumn palette of seasonal blooms.
Now that it is officially autumn and the days are getting shorter, everything is flavored with a perfumy pumpkin spice, the landscape is emblazon with warm hues of red, orange, gold and bronze, there are more hayrides and corn mazes than a person can possibly take in in one season, and the air has that refreshing crispness that makes us all want to snuggle the one we love just a little bit closer. It seems like the perfect time to plan an autumn themed wedding!

Planning a great party or special event can be a daunting task. The stress seems almost doubled when planning your dream wedding. From choosing a date, a venue, who to invite, designing a theme, picking a color scheme… many couples find themselves overwhelmed before they’ve even begun! Every wedding is as unique as the couple themselves. We at Stein Your Florist Co. have been in business more than 128 years, and with an average of 10-12 weddings, both big and small, a month… well you do the math, it’s a lot of weddings!

Autumn bridal cascade by Stein Your Florist Co.
A traditional bridal cascade of orange
Asiatic lilies, red roses, solidego, caramel daisies,
and red hypericum berries with assorted foliages in
warm fall hues.
We can’t stress enough to our couples the importance of maintaining a theme throughout their wedding. You don’t want your guests moving from your ceremony decked in pretty pinks into a dark and gothic reception… at least not without a costume change, a narrator and perhaps some movie magic. If your theme isn’t cohesive your guests may end up feeling like they’re crashing the wedding next door!

We recommend choosing a theme early and carrying it through every aspect of your big day. If you stay on track this will help alleviate some of the stress that comes with the vast array of choices you’ll be faced with when planning your wedding. If you’ve decided on warm autumn hues, then there’s no reason to even look at all those baby pink table linens and all those cool blue blooms you saw at your friend’s wedding can take a hike!

Autumn Color Palette by Stein Your Florist Co.
Autumn Color Palette:
Yellow, Gold, Caramel, Orange, Rust, Apple Red,
Chocolate Brown  and Olive Green.

One of our favorite autumn color palettes includes a sunny yellow, a warm gold, caramel, orange, rust, deep apple red, and chocolate brown with an accent of olive green, our homage to the last bits of verdant foliage that hangs on through autumn until it’s covered by winter’s snowfall.

Paperless Post
Introduce your theme and color scheme to your guests early. This means the initial save the date card and the following invitation should give your guests a taste of what’s to come and leave them wanting more. The good people of Paperless Post offer beautiful, customizable online and paper stationary to reflect your individual aesthetic. You can even upload your own pictures to make your invitations truly unique. Their lovely “Autumn Boughs” design suits our theme and color palette perfectly. The wispy branches still laden with fall’s changing leaves across the top is complimented by the pile of fallen foliage at the bottom of the invitation, while the gentle ivory background keeps it wedding elegant. (Follow up your event with matching thank you cards to say thanks and bring back memories of the awesome time everyone had!)

Autumn Centerpiece by Stein Your Florist Co.
This rustic autumn centerpiece captures all the
colors of our fall palette:  red and orange roses,
rust dahlias, caramel daisies, yellow solidego,
golden ranunculus, orange alstroemeria and
Asiatic lilies, brown lotus pods, branches, and
millet with accents of olive green seeded eucalyptus.
Now that the stage has been set it’s time to put on the show! The best way to put on this production with a cohesive look is with flowers and botanicals… though we may be a bit biased ;) Though your venue may change throughout your wedding day your decorations should be the glue that binds your theme together. That means the ceremony, the cocktail hour, the reception, every aspect of your wedding should be decorated in the same color scheme and flower varieties (though flower variety isn’t as important as keeping to your color scheme, so using less expensive blooms in your centerpieces compared to the bridal bouquets is a valid substitution).

Of course the bridesmaids’ dresses and the groomsmen’s ties are important too, as are the table linens… their color will serve as the background of your wedding and give your blooms something to pop against. We love the look of olive green as a background color and as a floral accent; in the floral business green is somewhat of a neutral for us. It’s Mother Nature’s color and is perfect for displaying her autumn bounty, plus your guys and girls will look great in it, but you can’t go wrong with any autumn hue.

Autumn Wedding Bouquet by Stein Your Florist Co.
This bouquet takes a walk on the wild side with accents
of leopard print ribbon. A gathering of sunflowers, thistle, black
ornamental peppers, bronze chrysanthemums, orange calla
lilies, solidego, seeded eucalyptus and touches of wispy
plumosa are surrounded by a collar of chocolate
curled ti leaves.
We also recommend choosing flowers that are in season. While off-season blooms could be specially grown just for your big day, they are going to be expensive and the quality will not be as good as flowers that are in season. Some of our favorite autumn flowers are:  Asiatic lilies, celosia (aka coxcomb), dahlias, gerbera daisies, alstroemeria, calla lilies, chrysanthemums, leucadendron, roses, yarrow, solidego, hypericum berries, sunflowers, carnations and ranunculus. You’ll see many of these flowers represented in the bouquets pictured throughout this post. In the right hues, your bouquets will capture the warmth and beauty of the fall season and your big day will be unforgettable.

Have fun planning your autumn parties and weddings and enjoy all the season has to offer!

The Dog Days of Summer

Dog Days of Summer - Stein Your Florist Co.
Great Dane Elliott enjoying a wee bouquet of blooms.
It’s hot. The sun beats down from a cloudless sky through stagnant humid air, falling upon human, animal, plant and the inanimate alike. The streets absorb the heat to the point that the tar becomes almost fluid and if a car drove by it would surely find itself stuck. As you stand stationary you feel beads of sweat form and roll down your face and back; any movement would surely cause a sweat so profuse it would seep through your clothes leaving you wet, embarrassed and somehow even hotter still. The air is so thick you could practically chew on it if it wasn’t choking you. Vision clouding waves of heat fall into view, distorting the landscape of motionless blades of grass and unmoving trees full and heavy with summer’s bounty. Squirrels, birds, feral cats and that fat backyard groundhog you nicknamed Sebastian long for any kind relief as they struggle just to breathe, and you swear they somehow know about air conditioning and are jealous when they see humans retreat indoors with their beloved chosen pets. The sun is a relentless furnace with no breeze to calm its fiery breath. It’s just... So. Damn. Hot. These are the dog days of summer.

Dog Days of Summer - Stein Your Florist Co.
Poodle Winston couldn't be happier with his yellow ranunculus!
We are in the thick of it! The Old Farmer's Almanac lists the traditional period of the Dog Days as the 40 days beginning July 3 and ending August 11. We thought the best way to pass this time would be to pair some of our favorite pooches with pretty petals!

Dog Days of Summer - Stein Your Florist Co.
Miniature poodle Sherman is celebrating with flowers!
The Romans referred to the dog days as diēs caniculārēs and associated the hot weather with the star Sirius. They considered Sirius to be the "Dog Star" because it is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major or Great Dog.

Dog Days of Summer - Stein Your Florist Co.
Layla enjoyed her visit to Steins!

The Ancient Greeks thought that Sirius's emanations could affect dogs adversely, making them behave abnormally during the "dog days," the hottest days of the summer. Their excessive panting in hot weather was thought to place them at risk of desiccation and disease.

Those cats are interfering with my flowers!

According to Brady’s Clavis Calendaria, 1813, the Dog Days were popularly believed to be an evil time "the Sea boiled, the Wine turned sour, Dogs grew mad, and all other creatures became languid; causing to man, among other diseases, burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies."

Dog Days of Summer - Stein Your Florist Co.
If you can tolerate an outdoor picnic during the dog days
of summer, don't forget to pack your poodle!
Here at Stein Your Florist we have a mixed bag of feelings about the Dog Days of Summer… Some of us love it, enjoying every second they can in the heat, reveling in a visit to the beach, basking in the sun’s rays and holding joyous backyard barbecues full of levity and fireworks…

Dog Days of Summer - Stein Your Florist Co.
Leo loves his rainbow roses!
Others not so much, longing for the days of winter, stating “those snowstorms weren’t so bad,” lamenting over how hot it’s going to be when they get in their cars to go home, complaining about their summer wardrobe and emphatically stating that the flowers just don’t like it!

Dog Days of Summer - Stein Your Florist Co.
That's one patriotic pooch!
Like it or lump it, it is what it is. The Dog Days of Summer are here, but autumn’s relief will arrive soon enough and we may find that we miss summer’s verdant hues and that devastating feeling of passing out as soon as you step outside.
