Artistic Wedding Flowers
It’s Wedding Wednesday!! As promised, this week we’re sharing
more from the beautiful wedding reception at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine
Arts.
The PAFA is such a unique venue with wonderfully eclectic art and the couple wanted to translate that into their reception centerpieces. Each arrangement was designed to be different from the others, while still lending a cohesive look throughout the venue.
The main reception room tables were adorned in beautiful white and green flowers. The feature flowers in the bouquets are white phalaenopsis orchids, green cymbidium orchids, casablanca lilies, white roses, ivory hypericum berries, and green hanging amaranthus.
In an adjoining gallery, cocktail tables had their own unique centerpieces as well, though they were designed in beautiful bold purples and greens. Green cymbidium orchids, green hydrangea, deep purple stock, lavender lisianthus, purple mokara and dendrobium orchids, and green hanging amaranthus were featured in these arrangements.
Throughout all the rooms amazing foliage was incorporated for a very lush and lavish look. Variegated pittosporum, zebra striped leaves, seeded eucalyptus, sansevieria, springeri, dusty miller, emerald, ti leaves, blades of lily grass and giant elephant ear philodendron are among the many varieties included in the centerpieces.
Finally, curly willow branches were used for texture and drama, curving over the tops of some arrangements and reaching for the sky in others.
Art was truly prominent throughout this reception, on the walls and on the tables. It was a true joy to design these unique arrangements for such a joyous occasion.

Opulent Bridal Clutch Bouquet
This
bridal bouquet is so classically beautiful, we can’t believe it took us this
long to blog about it! We created this lovely clutch bouquet for a bride with
very particular taste and a generous budget a few years ago.
When we think of high-end wedding flowers, lilies, roses, orchids and stephanotis instantly come to mind and this bouquet has a generous gathering of all four of these floral riches. This week’s Wedding Wednesday bouquet is certainly opulent.
We choose the finest white Casablanca lilies, white Eskimo roses, and green cymbidium orchids for this bouquet and finished it with fragrant stephanotis with pearled centers for an extra bit of wedding romance.

Blue Orchid Bridal Bouquet
It’s
another beautiful blue bouquet for this week’s Wedding Wednesday!
This
bridal cascade was created with blue dendrobium orchids from Thailand and white
roses with accents of baby’s breath and foliage. The bride requested to have
loops of white ribbon incorporated with long streamers hanging to add another
textural element to her traditional bouquet.
While the colors of this bouquet seem a bit wintry, the blue orchids give it a slight tropical feel. These orchids are naturally fuchsia and white; they have been dyed blue with special floral dye that the flower absorbs through the stem, turning the fuchsia portions of the bloom deep blue and the white portions turquoise. They have long been popular here at the shop for proms, weddings and as an everyday floral delight.

365 Days of Floral Education - Days 291 - 295
As
part of our 125th Anniversary celebration at Stein Your Florist Co.
we are sharing a year of floral education, November 1, 2012 thru October 31,
2013. Each day we will post something new on our Facebook page to share
our knowledge of our favorite things, flowers and plants and we'll be updating
our blog every 5 days or so. No need for pencils and notebooks, just sharing
some simple lessons in floristry.
Day 291 – Celosia is used as a treatment
for intestinal worms (particularly tapeworm), blood diseases, mouth sores, eye
problems. The seeds treat chest complaints and the flowers treat diarrhea. The
leaves are used as dressings for boils and sores, and the boiled vegetables are
said to be slightly diuretic.
Day 292 - Orchids have been used in traditional
medicine in an effort to treat many diseases and ailments. They have been used
as a source of herbal remedies in China since 2800 BC. Gastrodia elata is one of the three orchids listed in the
earliest known Chinese Materia Medica. This variety of dendrobium orchid is
called Galaxy.
Day 293 - The underground tubers of some terrestrial
orchids are ground to a powder and used for cooking, such as in the hot
beverage salep or in the
Turkish frozen treat dondurma. The dried leaves of some orchid varieties are
used to flavor rum on Reunion Island. And some orchid species of the group Gastrodia produce potato-like tubers
and were consumed as food by native peoples in Australia and can be
successfully cultivated. This variety of dendrobium orchid is called Fuji.
Day 294 – Huckleberry grows as a shrub and
is part of the heath family of plants. Huckleberries were traditionally an
important part of the diet of many Native American tribes of North America,
including the Crow tribe.
Day 295 – Lily grass lends itself well to a
myriad of floral designs, whether in long blades or twisted and looped into
contemporary designs. There are 2 widely used species: Liriope, which was the name of Narcissus' mother and she was a
fountain nymph, and Ophiopogon, which is from the Greek "ophis" (a
snake) and "pogon" (a beard).
